Week 14 Analysis: Literary Analysis of The Maltese Falcon

For this week I am going to be doing a literary analysis of "The Maltese Falcon". I decided to use the setting and imagery as the literary devices. This novel is great at painting a picture for the readers and the way that it does that is through its dialogue. Pretty much the entire novel is dialogue and I don't think that we would get the same effect of the imagery if there wasn't as much. I think the excessive use of dialogue helps the reader paint a picture on the period that the book takes place in. They use a lot of slang and abbreviated words to highlight the lifestyle that the people back then lived. The theme of the story definitely has to be mystery. I say that because the whole story is a goose chase on who murdered Spade's partner and we are left guessing the entire time. The story takes place in the early 30's to late 40's and the use of dialogue is clear that it is definitely that time period. It shows the lack of technology they had to solve a murder as opposed to nowadays. I think its really neat to see people that didn't rely on all that technology to properly solve the murder.

  1. Austin, I agree with you the a good way to tell if the story or text has a good use of imagery is if while you or he reader is reading it they are able to vividly see what is occuring and they have a picture in the mind of so. Diaglouge can definilty play a role in that and I thnk the use of diction does so as well.

  2. Hi, Austin!

We did not choose the same book, but I remember reading an excerpt of it in our book. That excerpt really caught my attention, so I intend to read it someday.
I found it interesting that you picked those literary devices and I could clearly see the setting one through your analysis. However, since it is a short analysis and I have not read the story, it was kinda hard for me to see the imagery one.
But thank you for sharing it!

  3. Hi Austin,

Dialogue is a great example of a literary device used to create the visual setting of a novel. Without having read this novel, I would be curious to see a few examples of words or slang that they used that you would consider points out the place in time the novel is representing or was written in.

  4. Hi Austin!
This sounds like a good novel to read, I think I would enjoy the mystery of solving the murder. I think that the use of imagery is very important, in helping the reader understand the setting of the story. It is also very helpful as you stated because if the story is in a different time period then you live, you can get a picture in your mind. Thank you for sharing.
